Why money shouldn’t equal free speech?

Money is not a right, nor is it something that we have organically. It is a man-made entity that separates the haves from the have-nots. My understanding of the First Amendment is that it was to cover those inalienable rights that we have and which the government should not interfere. If you will, what some people would call God-given rights; what I call natural rights. We all have speech – meaning our thoughts and the words to express them. Words and thoughts are not given by someone else or obtained through some outside means. They are honed by education…but education doesn’t give us the ability. We are born with the ability to speak. We are born with brains that are capable of thinking. Money is man-made and part of our economic system. Those who have it are more privileged by society than those that don’t. Therefore, by making money equal free speech we are giving those already privileged people more privilege. The First Amendment should be about leveling the playing field. Speech is something that we all have which makes us equal. This decision takes that away.
